Decomposition

In a decomposition reaction, a compound is broken down into two or more simpler substances. Depending on the reactants, the products could be elements or compounds.

Application

As described in the combustion section, coal-burning power plants and automobiles release gaseous oxides of nitrogen and sulfur into the air. Nitrogen dioxide in particular can decompose when exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, in the following reaction:nitrogen dioxide(g)->nitrogen monoxide(g) + oxygen(g)
NO2(g)->NO(g)+O(g)

Impact

Firstly, the oxygen produced by this reaction is very reactive, combining with other chemicals to cause serious health effects, including breathing disorders. Furthermore, the produced nitrogen monoxide can accumulate in the atmosphere, combining with other compounds in the air to form photochemical smog. Smog is particularly harmful for seniors, children, and people with heart and lung conditions. It can inflame breathing passages, causing shortness of breath, pain, wheezing, and coughing. It can cause eye and nose irritation and interferes with the body's ability to fight infection. Hospital admissions and respiratory deaths often increase during periods when smog levels are high.src
