the Concert

The information page will have a bunch of other sections (or other pages):

SLIC’s first initiative is the Stop Toronto Poverty Summit, a benefit concert targeting child poverty in Toronto.

We are hoping to hold our concert during the Victoria Day weekend of 2006. Youth, aged 12 to 18 are our key demographic, and we aspire for an audience of over a thousand. The concert will focus on the Toronto music scene, featuring independent Toronto bands willing to give their time and talent to the cause. Several bands, including ‘Magneta Lane’ and ‘Shawn Hewitt and the National Strike’ have already expressed interest. We hope to have enough bands to hold a six-hour concert, from the mid-afternoon to evening. SLIC is currently considering a few downtown venues and are in the process of determining which best suits our vision.

The concert will also include informational booths for youth leadership groups. Groups such as Free the Children and Greenquest would be given a chance to display their cause and speak personally with interested youth. These booths would provide a direct opportunity for youth to learn about different possibilities for social action and youth leadership involvement. In between sets, we were also planning on having guest speakers, such as representatives from Free the Children and Amnesty International, to speak about social justice and youth leadership.
