Technology Today and Tomorrow

  1. What is a communication channel?
A communication channel is the path over which a message must travel to get from the sender to the receiver. Ex. telephone wire
  2. List the seven inputs every communication system needs and give at least two example of each.
    The seven essential inputs are:
    • People: 911 Operator, Computer Operator
    • Information: Directions for operation of machines, police crime codes
    • Materials: Trees, Metal
    • Tools and Machines: Computer, Telephone
    • Energy: Mechanical Energy, Electrical Energy
    • Capital: Money, Equipment -
    • Time: in designing new machines/equipment, in processing information
  3. Give three examples of careers related to the communication system.
    • Computer Engineer
    • Photographers
    • Cameraperson
  4. Define processes, as related to the communication systems. Give three examples of communication processes.
Processes – all the things done to or with the inputs in a communication system in order to get the desired result/output. Also they are all the activities involved in creating the messages, sending them, and receiving them.
  5. What is the desired output of a communication system?
The desired output of a communication system is that the message will received.
  6. Describe at least two positive impacts of a communication system.
    • We now have fast access to wealth of information
    • The ability to communicate over long distances
  7. Describe two concerns many people have about the impacts of television.
    • Violent TV shows have been criticized as encouraging violent or antisocial behaviour
    • Watching TV affects a person’s reading habits and their reading ability
  8. How is privacy affected by communication systems?
There is a large amount of a person’s financial and medical conditions stored on a computer. This information can be easily accessed by unfriendly business and agencies. Also telemarketing produces a privacy issue. Many people do not want companies calling their houses about purchasing products or answering surveys. These are two ways in which someone’s privacy can be invaded.
  9. What are some physical problems commonly associated with using a computer?
Some of the common physical problems are:
    • Blurred Vision
    • Eyestrain
    • Headaches
  10. What is the concern about electromagnetic radiation?
The concern about electromagnetic radiation is that it might possibly lead to contributing towards a person’s chances at getting some form of cancer.
